Enthusiastic Response to Data Miner Recipes from an Expert
TULSA, OK (March 25, 2008) - Dr. Bob Nisbet, a recognized expert on data mining and the author of many important publications in this area, has recently performed a quick test of
STATISTICA Data Miner with built-in Data Miner Recipes. Dr. Nisbet stated that he “liked the way the new Recipes interface leads the user through common data mining tasks” and he particularly liked the redundancy check. The evaluation copy that Dr. Nisbet was provided did not include documentation, which led to an unintended “test of intuitiveness” of that new UI – Dr. Nisbet was still able to use the Recipes facility. Moreover, using the default parameters in
STATISTICA Data Miner, KXEN (version 3.3.3) and SPSS Clementine Neural Net (Version 11.0), he found that the automated function of
STATISTICA Data Miner Recipes was as automatic (or nearly so) as these others tools and yet provided superior performance.
Dr. Nisbet’s sample data set was a telecommunication data set with 10,000 rows and the tests were conducted using out-of-the-box parameters and configurations for all three software packages. Overall performance was measured on the basis of Global Accuracy as measured by (True-Positives + True-Negatives)/N.
UCB Deploys STATISTICA Enterprise

Presentation at PRB Coal Users' Group at Electric Power

TULSA, OK (Jan. 11, 2008) - Dr. Thomas Hill, VP Analytic Solutions at StatSoft will be presenting a paper at the 2008 Power River Basin Coal Users' Group at Electric Power 2008 in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Hill will present the paper, Successful Robust Optimization Strategies Based on Historical Data for Existing Coal Burning Furnace Technologies (Beyond DOE, CFD, and Statistical Modeling), along with Douglas Shuit, Process Performance Engineer, Alliant Energy.
This presentation will illustrate the approach and specific methodologies in various case studies involving cyclone and wall-fired furnaces to (1) lower emissions (NOx, CO) and (2) improve the consistency (robustness, availability) of operations over a wide range of coal flows, loads, fuel qualities, etc., thus leading to less downtime (greater reliability of generation capacity), lower operational costs, and improved safety. These methods, which can be applied to virtually any boiler technology and plants with various degrees of instrumentation, and typically without requiring modifications to the control system, will also be contrasted with traditional analytic approaches such as DOE (design of experiments), CFD (computational fluid dynamics), as well as neural-networks and neural-networks based closed loop control and "optimization": None of these methods can address complex systems with large numbers of parameters, are often costly to implement (e.g., closed loop control), and are not suitable to achieve robust optimization of multiple performance goals (low NOx, CO, LOI, etc.) with existing instrumentation and control systems.

StatSoft Announces the Release of Data Miner Recipes

TULSA, OK (Dec. 6, 2007) -
STATISTICA Data Miner now includes Data Miner Recipes, a quick and easy way to run projects with one click using a wizard-like user interface. Data Miner Recipes will guide users step-by-step through the data mining process to connect to data, modify/prepare data, perform computations, review results, and save/deploy the results.
A general trend in data mining is the increasing emphasis on solutions based on simple analytic processes, rather than the creation of ever-more sophisticated general analytic tools. "The
STATISTICA Data Miner Recipe approach offers truly a breakthrough in area of data mining applications. It provides an extremely intuitive and efficient graphical interface which not only cuts down the time necessary perform routine, predictive data mining tasks but also enables those with limited data mining experience to execute a "recipe-like" step-by-step analytic process." According to Dr. Thomas Hill, VP Analytic Solutions at StatSoft With these intuitive dialogs, users can perform various data mining tasks such as regression, classification, and clustering. Other recipes can be built quickly as custom solutions. Completed recipes can be saved and deployed as project files to score new data.
StatSoft Power Solutions working with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and EPRI's Cyclone Interest Group (CIG) to demonstrate the effectiveness of historical data driven methods for achieving robust cyclone performance

TULSA, OK (Nov. .29 2007) - StatSoft Power Solutions (www.StatSoftPower.com) has been awarded a contract from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI's Cyclone Interest Group) for a project to demonstrate the effectiveness of (historical) data driven and data mining methods for achieving stable flame temperatures. While cyclone furnaces have not been commissioned for many years, numerous operators in the United States continue to improve on the operation of this versatile boiler design, to achieve consistent low-emissions. In collaboration with EPRI and Alliant Energy, StatSoft Power Solutions is using StatSoft's patent-pending methods for leveraging existing historical data to identify operational recommendations (operational parameter ranges) to achieve robust performance -- i.e., stable optimal flame temperatures in this case.
The results of this demonstration project are available from EPRI, and are scheduled for publication in the first quarter of 2008.
