My baby girl received a bouncy activity center as a gift from my aunt and uncle. It’s noisy and came in a thousand pieces. She was maybe a week old when the gift arrived and therefore wouldn’t be able to enjoy it for several months. That did not stop me from opening it, spreading the pieces out on the floor and jumping right it, putting it together. It started with me glancing at the pictures in the installation instruction manual. Then I got to work. At one point, I realized that I put the leg pieces together before attaching them to the activity center. This is not right. I wasted some time because I missed a crucial step in the process. This happens in data analysis all too often as well.

Data exploration and preparation is most helpful as a first step. In our eagerness to validate our work with statistical analysis, this step can get temporarily overlooked. A good analysis will always come...

 It’s back-to-school week for many of us. My daughter started a new school.  She loves it, though I’m pretty sure the love is highly correlated with the new playground and her new pink backpack and lunch bag at this point. The world she is growing up in is so much different than the one that anyone in their 20s or older grew up in. Education today is less about going to school or the library and stuffing your head full of information, and more about knowing that the information is out there and ready to be found and used.  

I remember the "talking machines" of the 1980s; vending machines, clothing dryer, etc. They were more annoying than useful. I have very strong memories of a vending machine for Pepsi products. I would put money in the machine and push a button. The machine would LOUDLY announce that I did not have enough money. Or it would LOUDLY announce that my drink was selected and would be delivered. I was annoyed by this LOUD feedback from the vending machine.

Eventually all the "talking machines" were withdrawn from the market because they annoyed everyone.

This was not machine intelligence, but rather someone trying...

So I was talking with my dog, Pharyn, the other day, and she was telling me that—wait, perhaps I'd best backtrack and provide a little explanation: Pharyn is my family's dog. Well, Pharyn Rose, actually; my step-daughters didn’t think just ‘Pharyn’ was feminine enough. She's a whip-smart Dalmatian-Pitbull Terrier mix with the endurance of a sled dog, the strength of a grizzly bear, the heart of a lion, and the brain of someone whose idea of quality television doesn't include "The Jersey Shore," “Big Brother,” or so-called ‘reality TV’ programming in general.

 
StatSoft hosted an event in Hillsboro, OR, to highlight solutions for complex manufacturing using the STATISTICA Enterprise analytics platform.
