STATISTICA offers the ability to re-run or resume an analysis from a workbook. This is especially useful when you need to repeat an analysis or you are interrupted from your analysis and need to pick up where you previously stopped.
As an example, let’s use the Adstudy data set from the STATISTICA example data files and send the analysis results to a workbook. To access Adstudy, select the Home tab, and in the File group, click the Open arrow and select Open Examples. Double-click on the Datasets folder, and then double-click on the Adstudy spreadsheet to open it.
Also on the Home tab, in the Tools group, click Options. In the Options dialog box, select Output Manager (located under Analyses/Graphs). Ensure that the Workbook option button and the Single Workbook (common for all Analyses/graphs) option button are selected as shown in the following image.
Click the OK button.
Now select the Statistics tab. In the Base group, click Basic Statistics. In the Basic Statistics and Tables Startup Panel, select Descriptive statistics and click the OK button. In the Descriptive Statistics dialog box, click the Variables button, and in the variable selection dialog box, select variables 4-6. Click OK. Then, in the Descriptive Statistics dialog box, click the Summary button. This places the default summary statistics for variables 4-6 in a results spreadsheet that is within a STATISTICA Workbook:
Notice that there is a red arrow on each workbook folder. This is an indicator that the script that produced the results in that folder has been attached to the folder. This enables STATISTICA to re-run or resume this descriptive statistics analysis. To resume the analysis, right-click on a folder that has a red arrow, and from the shortcut menu, select Resume Analysis. The Resume Analysis dialog box will be displayed. The resume analysis functionality enables you to bring an analysis back to the point before the results were generated, allowing you to select different options or continue an analysis in progress.
You can also choose to either Use original data source or Use new data source. The first option will use the original data spreadsheet (in our case, the Adstudy data) when resuming the analysis. The latter option gives you the ability to use your analyses as “templates” that can then be applied to new data sources. In addition to specifying the data source, you can choose to Output to current folder or Output to new folder. Thus, any new results produced after resuming the analysis can either be placed in the same (current) folder as before or in a new folder for better distinction. To re-run an analysis, right-click on a folder that has a red arrow, and from the shortcut menu, select Re-run Analysis. The Re-run Analysis dialog box will be displayed. The re-run analysis functionality enables you to update/re-run results from analyses with either the original data or when new data is entered into the spreadsheet.
As with resuming the analysis, you can choose to either use the original data source or use a new one. You can also choose to replace the current folder contents with the new results you get from re-running the analysis or you can put the new results in their own folder. Note that if you delete results output from your workbook, when you re-run the analysis the output deleted will be regenerated. Continuing with our example, right-click on the Descriptive statistics dialog folder and select Re-run Analysis from the shortcut menu. In the Re-run Analysis dialog box, under Input Data, select the Use new data source option button, and then click the Browse button. In the Select Data Source dialog box, click the Files button. This should take you back to the example datasets folder. Double-click on the Characteristics data set. In the Re-run Analysis dialog box, under Output, select Output to new folder.
Click the OK button. The descriptive statistics analysis has been re-run using the Characteristics data set (notice the summary statistics are now for variables 4-6 for this data set). The results were placed in a new folder of the workbook, keeping the previous results from the Adstudy data.
Now, right-click on the second Descriptive statistics dialog folder (the one for the Characteristics data set) and select Resume Analysis from the shortcut menu. In the Resume Analysis dialog box, under Input Data, select the Use original data source option button. Under Output, select the Output to current folder option button.
Click the OK button. The descriptive statistics analysis resumes with variables 4-6 for the Characteristics data set chosen. Click the Variables button and select variables 9-11. Click OK to make the variable selection, and then click the Summary button. This places the summary statistics spreadsheet for variables 9-11 within the same Descriptive statistics dialog folder as with the previous variable selection for this data source.
Save your workbooks and use the convenient re-run and resume options to easily reproduce results on the same or different data sets or to continue an interrupted analytic project.
