• Tell us about your education and career. I have a Master of Science in Medical Informatics from the University of Utah, School of Medicine. I graduate from the School of Medicine with and MD in July, and I am finishing a PhD in Biomedical Informatics. My ultimate goal is a career in academic medicine that combines pediatrics, genetics, and informatics.
• What challenges did you face that drove you to use STATISTICA? My first challenge was to find ways to extract information from the NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) dataset. It is a huge dataset and I wanted to try a variety of data mining techniques on it to find out which method would produce the best results. I tried several tools and STATISTICA was by far the quickest and easiest to use.
• How do you use STATISTICA? I use many of the data mining tools within STATISTICA now to produce respiratory virus outbreak prediction tools, such as those employed in my mobile influenza prediction app (m.germcast.com). I also use it for text mining.
• Why did you use STATISITICA over another product? STATISTICA was much easier to use and offered more features in one product. In addition many of the processes that I run are very CPU intensive and STATISTICA seems to perform faster than some of the other products I tried.
• Did STATISTICA give you the solution you were seeking? Yes.
• What are STATISTICA strengths? Ease of use – you can get started very quickly with minimal training, ability to output various types of code to implement models, and the variety of data mining tools in a single application.
• Would you recommend STATISTICA to a colleague or friend? Absolutely, It’s a great product!
