How to Restructure an Excel Spreadsheet for STATISTICA Analyses

STATISTICA offers high-power analytic tools not found in Excel. These advanced analytic tools also require more structural requirements for the data. This example shows how a typical Excel data sheet can be rearranged to create a STATISTICA spreadsheet ready for analysis.

Why Use Ternary Graph?

STATISTICA has a rich suite of data visualizations. In recent weeks, StatSoft has received questions on the Ternary Graph (also known as Trilinear). So we thought a high-level overview would be helpful.

This graph is highly useful in science and manufacturing. Maybe you need to:

experiment and discover an optimal combination of chemicals

present a report on water quality

graph mineral types for your geology class

Breast Cancer and Statistics

Because the news is full of stories about the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force's new breast cancer screening recommendations, I want to revisit some basic statistics.

Per the CDC, the ten most common causes for death in US women are:

How to Access Data via STATISTICA Macro

What if your STATISTICA macro is saved in a workbook with the active dataset? How can you reference this spreadsheet?

If the Workbook is visible and on top, you could use ActiveDataSet or ActiveWorkbook.ActiveInput.

Perfection is... the Enemy of Good Enough

A friend recommended that I read Avinash Kaushik's 2009 book called Web Analytics 2.0: The Art of Online Accountability and Science of Customer Centricity.

I love the sense of humor and practical approach that the writer displays. There were sections that reminded me that Web Analytics has many similarities to "classic" Statistical Analysis. And some sections that made me think "data mining could solve that problem".

For example, the author talks about the paradox of data:

How To Generate Random Normal Distribution Numbers

We recently received another interesting question from twitter.

How can I generate random normal distribution numbers with known mean and SD?

You need to use spreadsheet formulas. For example....

We received the above question from via our twitter account and found it interesting. The short answer:

Yes

We decided to reply to the tweet with a blog because we wanted to include pictures.

How to Print More Than One Item from a Workbook without Printing the Entire Workbook

There may be times when you want to print out a few graphs and spreadsheets from a STATISTICA Workbook, not the whole thing.

There are several options available to print the documents contained in a STATISTICA Workbook. You can print one item from the workbook, print the entire workbook, or choose just a few items to be printed.
