Variable Sorting Using SVB - My Scheming Dog Strikes Again!

So I took my dog, Pharyn, for a run the other day. Nothing exceptionable about that, save for the fact that it was JANUARY 28TH and very warm!!! Normally it is very cold this time of the year.

But anyway, we had a good time. Actually, I should probably say that she had a good time--having not run for a couple of weeks made her seem like a Ferrari driving through a school zone. She felt restrained and just dying for a chance to open the throttle wide and take off in a sprint. Unfortunately, I’m not in her league when it comes to endurance, so my huffing along held her back. Afterward, as I was lying on the floor trying to recover and she was licking my face so hard that my nose started to bleed, we had the following conversation:

Which NFL Team has lost Super Bowls in Four States?

Next Sunday, February 5, the New York Giants and the New England Patriots will play in Super Bowl XLVI. I’m not a huge American football fan, but I do typically watch the Super Bowl, just so I can keep up with pop culture and to hear what kind of music the kids are listening to these days.

I took a trip through Super Bowls past on Wikipedia. I played with the data in several ways, but these Categorized Pie Charts were my favorite. I had hoped to make a prediction of who would win the game based on the location of the game, but unfortunately the Super Bowl has never been played in Indiana before.

How to Summarize Data in STATISTICA

To gain understanding of our data, it is helpful to summarize it. Pivot tables, as found in Microsoft Excel and other programs, are used to summarize data and highlight important information. These tables can help us to extract meaning from data. Common tasks for pivot tables are to count, sum, or average.

Predictive Analytics, Getting Started

StatSoft, like many companies, asks customers to complete a "satisfaction survey." One customer mentioned me by name in a recent survey. They said "PM Angela Waner was great!!" Positive feedback is always nice to receive. It made me smile.

The customer, an insurance company, purchased predictive analytics software with services for "Getting Started With Predictive Analytics." This type of project is fairly common right now. It seems like everyone is interested in using predictive analytics.

Runs tests for evaluating the independence of samples

In Quality Control charting, we are interested in monitoring a process to assure the process stays within given specifications. It is also assumed that samples are independent of one another. This independence manifests in a random sequence of samples means. Of course, samples that fall outside of the control limits indicate that the process target has shifted, but another indicator is patterns across samples. When a process is in control, sequential samples should exhibit no pattern. Runs tests can detect patterns in a sequence of samples and at times give an earlier warning of a shift in a process.

For this exercise, the example data set, Cover.sta, will be used to show how runs tests can test for patterns in a sequence of samples. The variable of interest, Width, gives measurements taken from single ...

How to Save a Microsoft Word Document in STATISTICA

STATISTICA offers the ability to output your results - tables and graphs - to a Microsoft Word document. This feature makes creating your final analysis report easy. The step of copying and pasting the results to Word is no longer needed. Additionally, with Microsoft Word output, it is easy to share analysis output with colleagues, regardless of whether they use STATISTICA.

For those using the 64-bit version of STATISTICA and the 32-bit version of Microsoft Word, problems may arise when saving the Microsoft Word document. The dialog box to save the file does not default to saving the document as a *.docx, but rather an *.rtf file.

Is there a relationship between the percentage of female elected officials and gender wage equality?

Do you ever wake up and say “I want to find some interesting data today”?

Rather than acknowledge the fact that I might be the only geek here, I’ll just assume the answer is yes.

I knew the monthly jobs report was due out today, but I’ve already written about how “good” job report news isn’t always as positive as it seems on the surface.

So I looked elsewhere and ended up at the World Bank. I drilled down to the Gender Statistics database and selected all the countries that were available in the list. Two of the interesting items were “Proportion of seats held by women in national parliaments” and “Wage equality between women and men for similar work (ratio),” which seemed they’d be intriguing to look at both individually and plotted together.
